A collapse at an illegal gold mine in the Central African Republic near the Cameroonian border killed at least 100 people. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, August 19, at the Zomboye mine, approximately 50 kilometers from the town of Baboua.
Images shared on social media show part of the ground caving in at this large open-pit mine where hundreds of artisanal miners work. One miner described the scene as "catastrophic." The Baboua prosecutor announced the launch of a judicial investigation.
Mine collapses in illegal operations are common in the Central African Republic. Similar incidents in June, March, and February of this year had already killed dozens of people.
