The US Embassy in Tajikistan announced a temporary ban on US government staff traveling to border areas of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The decision followed a stray bullet fired from Afghan territory on August 12 that killed a 21-year-old woman in the Tajik village of Dashtak.
The Taliban launched military operations against dissident commander Juma Fateh, sending reinforcements from several provinces to Badakhshan and conducting helicopter strikes on his positions. Tajikistan's Foreign Ministry filed a formal protest note with the Taliban administration over the airspace violation and the killing of a pregnant woman.
The US Embassy urged American citizens to avoid the area, monitor local media, carry identification documents, and review their personal security plans.
