Taliban morality police in Herat arrested several women and girls in three separate incidents. One witness says a 13-year-old girl was detained despite wearing full covering, a veil, and a mask.
In one incident, a young girl leaving a tutoring course cried out for help from bystanders. Nearby shopkeepers protested, and one man was beaten with an electric baton by officers. In another incident, a woman with two young children was arrested while her children wept.
The mass arrest of women in Herat has intensified since June 6. Khalid Hanafi claimed those arrested were promoting unveiled behavior and causing unrest.
