The United Nations Development Programme has stated that access to reliable electricity across Afghanistan remains one of the country's greatest challenges, directly affecting healthcare, education, livelihoods, and local economic growth.
Only 40 to 42 percent of the population has access to the national power grid, with nearly 90 percent of that access concentrated in urban areas. Rural communities remain largely without electricity, and imported power from neighboring countries is also limited.
The UNDP has launched solar energy projects in schools, health centers, and women's markets across Afghanistan. Solar power has helped women entrepreneurs keep their businesses open longer and remain economically active during power outages.
