The United States government has announced a reward of up to $8 million for information leading to the identification or capture of Sanaullah Ghafari, the leader of ISIS-Khorasan. Ghafari, also known as "Shahab al-Muhajir," was born in Afghanistan in 1994 and was appointed to lead the ISIS-K branch in June 2020.
The US State Department says Ghafari previously operated in Kabul and was involved in planning armed operations, including suicide attacks. Washington also holds him responsible for approving ISIS-K operations in Afghanistan and managing the financial resources needed to carry them out.
Separately, the US has offered up to $10 million for information on Ubaidullah, a senior ISIS-K commander responsible for the group's finances. ISIS-K has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US and is listed as a major security threat in UN reports.
