A US military judge has ruled that the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the September 11 attacks, along with three co-defendants, will begin on June 5, 2028.
Mohammed is accused of conceiving the plot to crash passenger planes into buildings and presenting the idea to Osama bin Laden. He has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2006 and reports indicate he was subjected to waterboarding at least 183 times.
The trial has faced repeated delays due to legal challenges and disputes over admissible evidence. A previous plea deal — where Mohammed agreed to plead guilty in exchange for avoiding the death penalty — was overturned by the then-US Secretary of Defense.
