US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the American military withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden as "catastrophic" and a "dark stain" in American history, marking the fifth anniversary of the Kabul airport suicide bombing.
The August 26, 2021 attack killed 13 US service members, more than 160 Afghan civilians, and wounded 45 other American troops. The ISIS-Khorasan branch claimed responsibility for the deadly assault.
Rubio pledged that the Trump administration remains committed to honoring the memory of those killed and vowed that such a "betrayal" of US military forces would never be allowed to happen again.
