King Harald V of Norway, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, passed away Friday morning at Oslo University Hospital after being hospitalized with a bacterial blood infection. He was 89 years old.

Born on February 21, 1937, near Oslo, Harald ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father King Olav V. He reigned for over 35 years and had been hospitalized several times in recent years due to health complications.

With Harald's passing, his son Crown Prince Haakon, 53, has become the new King of Norway. Harald had previously rejected abdication, stating his oath as king was for life.
