A Turkish passenger ferry carrying 267 people capsized and sank near the coast of Northern Cyprus, killing at least eight people and leaving 18 others missing. The incident occurred on Sunday in the Mediterranean Sea.

The vessel "Filojet" began taking on water about 15 minutes after departing from Kyrenia port heading to Turkey. Survivors reported the ship had "unusual movements" before its bow was damaged and water flooded in. The ship sank to a depth of approximately 514 meters.

Northern Cyprus authorities announced that the captain and seven crew members have been detained for investigation. Search and rescue operations continue with the participation of Turkish and Northern Cyprus coast guards.
