Five years ago, General Chris Donahue became the last US soldier to leave Afghanistan at midnight on August 31, 2021, ending America's 20-year military presence. The war cost the United States two trillion dollars and claimed the lives of 2,238 American soldiers, with over 21,000 more wounded.
The withdrawal followed the Doha Agreement signed with the Taliban. Afghan security forces and civilian casualties exceeded 100,000. The Taliban seized power on August 15, 2021, and their rule has not been recognized by any country except Russia.
In the five years since, Afghan women have been banned from education, work, and public life. Many citizens say they have grown poorer since the Taliban's return, and the country has witnessed significant setbacks in education, healthcare, and development.
