Da Afghanistan <eshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan's power utility, has announced that Tajikistan's power company, Barqi Tojik, has agreed to increase the volume of its electricity exports to Afghanistan. The agreement was reached during a visit by a DABS delegation led by Abdulhaq Hamkar to Tajikistan.
DABS stated in a press release on Wednesday, September 29, that during a meeting between Mr. Hamkar and Mahmadumar Asozoda, the head of Barqi Tojik, the two sides discussed various issues, including increasing electricity imports, strengthening transmission lines, improving power quality, and tariffs.
According to the statement, the DABS delegation requested an increase in electricity exports from Tajikistan, and the Tajik delegation expressed its readiness to do so. The two parties also discussed the 500-kilovolt power transmission line project and agreed that technical and commercial teams from both companies would work on implementing the agreements.
Afghanistan is heavily dependent on imported electricity to meet its energy needs, importing power from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Iran. Currently, Tajikistan exports about 300 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan.
The 500 kV transmission line project (CASA-1000), intended to transmit electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan via Afghanistan, was a major regional project. Its work began under the previous government but was halted by political developments. The recent talks could be a step towards reviving parts of this crucial infrastructure project.
DABS has not provided further details on the amount of the increase in electricity imports or its timeline, but this agreement could help alleviate power shortages in Afghanistan, especially during the winter season.
