Abdul Wasi, head of the Taliban Prime Minister's office, met with Faisal bin Talq Al-Baqmi, the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Kabul, on Monday. The meeting, held at the presidential palace (Arg) in Kabul, focused on strengthening bilateral relations.
The Taliban Prime Minister's office announced in a statement that the two sides discussed "strengthening friendly relations, expanding bilateral cooperation, and continuing good relations" between Kabul and Riyadh. The meeting highlights ongoing diplomatic engagement between the Taliban government and a key regional power.
During the meeting, Abdul Wasi expressed gratitude for the Saudi ambassador's activities in Afghanistan and for the kingdom's humanitarian aid to recent earthquake victims. He emphasized that Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia have historically maintained good relations.
The head of the Prime Minister's office added that the Taliban government seeks to strengthen and expand relations with all countries based on mutual respect and cooperation in various fields. These remarks are part of the Taliban's oader diplomatic efforts to gain international legitimacy.
Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries that has kept its embassy in Kabul operational since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021. However, like the rest of the world, Riyadh has not yet formally recognized the Taliban government.
Over the past two years, alongside maintaining diplomatic ties, Saudi Arabia has sent significant humanitarian aid to Afghanistan through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre. This assistance has included food, medicine, and other essential supplies for the Afghan people.
