Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the Hezb-e-Islami party, criticized the Taliban government in an online speech and called for the transfer of power to the people of Afghanistan. He emphasized that the country's destiny should be determined by its citizens through the election of their representatives.
Mr. Hekmatyar proposed that power be transferred from the Taliban to the people, allowing them to shape their future system and government by electing a council. He clarified that decisions about the nation's fate should not be in the hands of political parties and groups, but should be based on the general will of the Afghan people.
Drawing on Afghanistan's recent history, the Hezb-e-Islami leader predicted that the Taliban government, like the previous Soviet and US-backed administrations, will not be sustainable. "Change is inevitable and near," he said.
In another part of his speech, Hekmatyar accused the Taliban government of being in political isolation. According to him, contrary to its claims, the group has no real and lasting friends in the region or the world.
He added that countries that previously supported the Taliban are no longer standing by them, and no country in the world fully supports the current Taliban government. This situation, in Hekmatyar's view, demonstrates the fragility of the Taliban's position on the international stage.
These remarks come as domestic and international pressure continues to mount on the Taliban to form an inclusive government and respect human rights, particularly the rights of women and minorities. The Taliban government has so far resisted these demands.
