The United Kingdom officially downgraded its diplomatic presence in Jerusalem on Thursday, renaming its Consulate General the "UK Mission in Jerusalem" amid a diplomatic row with Israel. The move signals a significant tension in the two countries' relations.
According to a statement from UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, the new mission will focus on delivering vital services in East Jerusalem and Palestine. The renaming follows Israel's call to close the consulate in response to UK-led sanctions on goods produced in Israeli settlements.
The UK Foreign Secretary emphasized that his country's long-standing position on East Jerusalem remains unchanged. "We have been clear that we do not accept that the Government of Israel has the legal right to close the itish Consulate General in Jerusalem, which has been there for nearly 200 years," the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office statement read.
The statement added, "The UK government reiterates its long-standing view that East Jerusalem is occupied territory." This position is based on the recognition followed by the United Nations and is a key point of contention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The downgrading of the diplomatic post is a symbolic but significant step, underscoring the UK's disapproval of Israel's settlement policies. The move could have an impact on the diplomatic and trade relations between the two allies.
This development occurs as international debate continues over the two-state solution and the final status of Jerusalem. The UK's action may encourage other European nations to adopt similar stances.
