Chinese fitness influencer and runner Sun Yuanyuan has been disqualified from the 2026 Berlin Marathon after photographs allegedly showed her riding a bicycle during the 42.2-km race. The incident has caused a significant stir in the running community.
Sun, who had initially recorded a time of 4:53:46, was removed from the official results for cheating. Photos taken by spectators appeared to show her on a bicycle for part of the course, a clear violation of marathon rules.
Following the disqualification, Sun Yuanyuan has apologized for "taking a shortcut." However, her apology did little to mitigate the severe consequences of her actions.
Sportswear brand Brooks, which sponsored the runner, announced it has terminated its sponsorship deal. In a statement, a spokesperson for the brand emphasized the importance of "integrity, fairness, and respect in running," adding that the company cannot support an athlete who violates these core principles.
The Berlin Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors and attracts thousands of professional and amateur runners from around the globe each year. The race has strict rules to ensure fair competition.
This incident highlights the ongoing importance of race monitoring and upholding the spirit of sportsmanship. Race organizers have stated they are reviewing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
