Students at Herat University report that the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice has banned the use of smartphones on the university campus and in its dormitories.
In a joint letter to Zawya News, the students stated that ministry officials search their rooms daily. If a smartphone is discovered, it is oken, and the student is threatened with expulsion from the university.
"While university students around the world are implementing projects using artificial intelligence, they have banned smartphones for us in Afghanistan," a student wrote in the letter. "This extremism has thrown Afghanistan back centuries."
The students emphasize that smartphones are not just for making calls but are a crucial tool for their academic and research activities. They rely on them to access online course materials, scientific articles, and to communicate with professors and classmates.
This new restriction is the latest in a series of stringent policies imposed by the Taliban on education and personal freedoms, particularly affecting young people.
The students of Herat University have called on Taliban officials and academic institutions to reconsider this decision and to remove barriers to modern education in the country.
