The spokesman for the Taliban's governor in Khost province has dismissed social media reports about a woman giving birth in front of the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) hospital as "far from the truth" and completely baseless.
Mustaghfir Gurbaz, the spokesman, stated that a joint committee from the governor's office and the Public Health Directorate thoroughly investigated the matter. According to his account, the woman had been referred to the hospital from her local district clinic due to high blood pressure.
Gurbaz explained that upon arrival, as she was getting out of the car, her condition worsened due to her high blood pressure, and she collapsed. He said other women at the scene gathered around, covered her with a cloth, and doctors from the hospital immediately rushed her inside for treatment.
The spokesman also mentioned that a video statement from one of the woman's family members exists, which clarifies the situation, but it has not been released due to "social sensitivities."
However, social media users have contested this official narrative. They allege that this particular hospital frequently turns away pregnant women, telling them it is "not time yet," which often results in these women giving birth on the road or before reaching home.
Critics of the official story questioned why the woman's male relatives were not there to help her if she fainted. They also asked why only other women gathered around her and questioned if only women visit that hospital, reflecting a deep mistrust of the official account.
