Reuters reported on Wednesday (October 28) that azilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro has fled to the United States after his preferred candidate was defeated in the presidential election. According to the report, Bolsonaro and his family have arrived in Florida.
This event occurred four days after azil's presidential election, in which incumbent President Inacio Lula da Silva secured victory with over 51% of the vote, remaining in office. Flavio Bolsonaro, a staunch supporter of Lula's rival, has not yet accepted the defeat.
His departure from azil came after he defied a Supreme Court order to surrender his passport. The court had requested he not leave the country in connection with a "money laundering" investigation.
Sources close to Flavio Bolsonaro confirmed to Reuters that he, his wife, and their two daughters have entered Florida. A senior US State Department official also stated that the department will issue visas for Bolsonaro and his family, allowing them entry into the United States.
This move could deepen the rift between azil and the United States, the two most populous countries in the Americas. President Lula has previously accused Washington of colluding with the Bolsonaro family to return them to power.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar action by Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of azil. In 2022, after his defeat to Lula, he also refused to accept the results and went to the US. Jair Bolsonaro later returned to azil but was sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges of plotting a coup after his supporters stormed government buildings.
