Yemen's Houthis claimed on Tuesday (October 27) that they attacked the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, as well as the Ras Tanura oil refinery in the east of the country. These claims have further escalated tensions in the region.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree announced that the group precisely targeted the Saudi Ministry of Defense with a ballistic missile. In a separate message, he claimed that a missile attack on the Ras Tanura oil refinery resulted in a "massive fire."
Furthermore, the Houthis claimed to have targeted two transport planes at Najran airport and King Khalid air base in Khamis Mushait, and also launched a drone towards Abha airport.
Saudi officials have not specifically commented on the targets claimed by the Houthis. However, they confirmed intercepting and destroying several missiles over Riyadh and an eastern province. AFP journalists in Riyadh also reported hearing several explosions in the city.
According to reports, as the explosions were heard and windows of buildings shook, the Saudi government sent a message urging people to take shelter. Saudi authorities announced that two ballistic missiles fired towards Riyadh were shot down, and their fragments hit a building and a car.
The Saudi-led military coalition also announced that three Houthi missiles fired towards Saudi Arabia's eastern province were intercepted and destroyed. These attacks are a continuation of rising tensions in recent weeks, during which the Houthis have increased their attacks on Saudi oil facilities and airports.
