A collision between a 580-type passenger vehicle and a fuel tanker at the northern entrance of the Salang Tunnel has resulted in five deaths and 16 injuries. Abdul Hamid Mubariz, an official at the northern Salang trauma center, stated that the incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, October 30.
He added that the passenger vehicle was traveling from the north towards the south. The Salang Highway, which connects Afghanistan's northern provinces to the capital, is known for being one of the country's busiest and most dangerous routes.
According to initial reports, three of the deceased were from Kabul, one from Parwan, and another from the Dehneh-e Ghori district of Baghlan province. The identities of all victims have not yet been fully confirmed.
A statement from the Taliban governor's office in Baghlan provided details on the injuries, noting that a 17-year-old youth had both legs amputated, a 40-year-old woman sustained a fractured femur, and a 20-year-old man suffered a head injury.
Mr. Mubariz said that three of the injured were transported to the provincial hospital in Baghlan, while the other 13 were taken to Parwan's provincial hospital by other drivers passing through the area. Some of the injured are reportedly in critical condition.
The exact cause of the fatal crash has not yet been determined, though an investigation is underway. Poor road conditions, driver negligence, and a lack of standard traffic signals are frequently cited as the primary causes of traffic accidents on Afghanistan's highways.
