The economic deputy of the Taliban government's prime minister's office has announced that the National Procurement Commission, in its latest meeting, approved six major electricity projects with a total value of 2.873 billion afghanis. These projects will be implemented in several key provinces of the country.
According to the released statement, these projects include several components, such as the expansion of the 220-kilovolt Hisar Shahi substation in Nangarhar, the construction and expansion of the Maimana and Andkhoy substations in Faryab province, and the construction of a 40-megawatt-ampere substation to transmit energy from the Yatimtaq gas plant in Jawzjan.
Two other projects are related to the expansion of the power transmission network. One of these involves extending a 9.3-kilometer transmission line from the main Arghandi-Ghazni line to a new substation in Maidan Wardak. The other project is the extension of a 139.2-kilometer 220-kilovolt line from the Andkhoy substation to the Tarmimkhana substation, which will significantly increase power transmission capacity in the north.
Additionally, the procurement commission has approved the purchase of necessary equipment for the SDH and PABX communication systems for the national electricity company, DABS, which will help improve the company's internal communications.
Officials at the economic deputy's office emphasized that the implementation of these projects will have a direct impact on improving electricity supply for citizens and supporting industrial and commercial activities in the respective provinces. Electricity shortage has been a major challenge in Afghanistan, and the Taliban government is trying to mitigate this problem by investing in the energy sector.
This comes as Afghanistan imports a large portion of its electricity from neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Developing domestic energy infrastructure can help reduce dependency and increase the long-term stability of the power grid. Source: Office of the Deputy PM for Economic Affairs
