Naseer Ahmad Faiq, the head of Afghanistan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, has called for an end to the "systematic repression and discrimination" by the Taliban and the immediate restoration of the fundamental rights of the people, especially women and girls, in Afghanistan.
Mr. Faiq announced on his X page on Saturday, October 31, that these demands were made in Afghanistan's official statement to the UN General Assembly regarding the report of the Human Rights Council. He emphasized that the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan requires urgent and serious attention from the international community.
The statement stressed the need for full support for the monitoring mission of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan. Additionally, the Afghan mission called for the immediate launch of an independent investigative mechanism to thoroughly examine human rights violations in the country and document the evidence.
A key point of the statement was the emphasis on ensuring justice and accountability. "Perpetrators of gross human rights violations must not be granted impunity," Mr. Faiq stated. The mission believes that impunity perpetuates the cycle of violence and injustice.
Afghanistan's UN mission also clarified that any engagement by the international community with the Taliban must be "principled and conditional" on real, measurable progress in human rights. The statement warns that unconditional engagement could lead to the normalization of repression and the systematic exclusion of various groups in society, particularly women.
Another part of the statement highlighted the need for continued humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, support for Afghan refugees in neighboring countries, and full adherence to the principle of non-refoulement.
In conclusion, Naseer Ahmad Faiq stressed, "The rights of the Afghan people are non-negotiable, and international human rights commitments must be translated into practical and meaningful actions." Source: Naseer Ahmad Faiq's X Page
