Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, has praised Canada’s role in supporting Afghan human rights and called for increased protection of at-risk Afghans. During his six-day visit to Canada, Bennett met with ethnic minorities including Turkmen, Uzbek, and Hazara communities, hearing their experiences of Taliban oppression.

The Special Rapporteur commended Canada for accepting over 50,000 Afghan refugees since the Taliban takeover. He emphasized the importance of continuing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan while adhering to principles of non-support for terrorist organizations his recent report, Bennett expressed serious concerns about human rights conditions in Afghanistan, including disturbing allegations of sexual violence against women in Taliban detention centers
