European Parliament Condemns Taliban Law: Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan
The European Parliament has strongly condemned the Taliban group’s law of enjoining good and forbidding evil. On Thursday, September 20, this European body issued a resolution stating that the Taliban’s new law has significantly worsened the human rights situation of Afghan women.
According to this resolution, which was passed with an overwhelming majority of 565 votes in favor, Afghan women face serious challenges such as forced marriages, early marriages, and gender-based violence. Members of the European Parliament have called on the European Union to support the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
The resolution also calls for holding the Taliban group accountable through investigations by the International Criminal Court and the establishment of an independent mechanism under UN supervision. Furthermore, MEPs emphasized the need for EU sanctions against the Taliban and called for the condemnation of countries seeking to normalize relations with this group.
This action by the European Parliament is in line with global efforts to support the rights of Afghan women and demonstrates the international community’s growing concern about the human rights situation in Afghanistan.
