AI Manipulation: Foreign Powers Target US Elections 

The U.S. government has raised alarms about foreign entities, particularly Russia and Iran, leveraging artificial intelligence to spread misinformation and influence the upcoming U.S. presidential election. According to a report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, these countries are using AI-generated content to sway public opinion and exacerbate divisive issues. 

Russia, identified as the primary culprit, has produced the most AI-generated election-related content, including text, images, and audiovisual media. Their efforts reportedly aim to bolster former President Donald Trump and highlight controversial topics like immigration. Iranian actors have also been implicated in creating fake news articles in English and Spanish for seemingly legitimate news websites. 

While AI has enhanced foreign influence operations, the report suggests it hasn’t revolutionized them yet. The impact of AI-generated content on U.S. elections will depend on foreign actors’ ability to overcome limitations and effectively disseminate such material.
