The United Nations is set to extend the mission of Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, for another year. This decision comes as part of a resolution to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council today, Thursday, 18th of Mizan. The resolution, backed by the European Union and 48 other countries, emphasizes the importance of documenting the situation in Afghanistan and ensuring transparency and accountability through Bennett’s work.

Naseer Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan’s representative in Geneva, highlighted that Afghanistan remains a central topic in the 57th session of the Human Rights Council. The resolution also calls for Afghanistan to be a focal point of global attention in 2025. However, the Taliban has banned Bennett from entering Afghanistan, accusing him of misrepresenting the country’s situation to the world.

This travel ban has sparked international reactions, with many expressing concern over the Taliban’s restrictions on human rights monitoring. Bennett’s previous reports have highlighted severe human rights violations, particularly against women, under the Taliban’s rule. The ongoing international support for Bennett’s mission underscores the global community’s commitment to addressing human rights issues in Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s opposition.
