US Diplomat Challenges Taliban’s Claims of Military Victory
Karen Decker, the US Chargé d’Affaires for Afghanistan, has emphasized the necessity of regional countries’ involvement in resolving Afghanistan’s challenges, while pointedly reminding the Taliban about “how” they came to power in August 2021.
Despite Taliban’s claims of defeating America militarily, Afghan experts assert that the group’s rise to power was facilitated through political negotiations and commitments made in the Doha Agreement. They maintain that without these diplomatic arrangements, the Taliban would not have been capable of defeating either US forces or Afghan security forces.
Decker’s subtle reference to Taliban’s path to power appears to be a diplomatic rebuke to the group, who continue to boast about their independence and alleged victory over America in diplomatic circles, while refusing to acknowledge Afghanistan’s ground realities or address regional security concerns.
