EU Pledges €19.8M to Empower Afghan Women Through Economic Growth

The European Union has allocated €19.8 million for women’s empowerment and job creation in Afghanistan through the Aga Khan Foundation. This initiative, with a total value of €22 million, aims to address urgent community needs and promote sustainable economic growth across the country.
Veronika Boskovic Pohar, EU Chargé d’Affaires in Afghanistan, emphasized that this program will foster inclusive growth and create resilient livelihoods for vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and farmers affected by the poppy cultivation ban. The Aga Khan Foundation’s Director, Najmuddin Najm, highlighted that the project will enhance agricultural production and revive local economies.
The 36-month project will directly benefit 34,200 households and indirectly impact 292,544 individuals. With a primary focus on women’s economic empowerment, the program expects to reach 26,793 women directly and 146,272 women indirectly through various initiatives including skills training and historical site restoration.
