Mullah Abdul Kabir Removed as Taliban’s Political Deputy
Mullah Abdul Kabir has been removed from his position as the political deputy of the Taliban’s Prime Minister. On Thursday, January 9, 2025, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, announced that by order of Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, Abdul Kabir has been appointed as the acting Minister of Refugees.
Khalilur Rahman Haqqani, the previous acting Minister of Refugees, was killed about a month ago in a suicide attack by ISIS inside the ministry. The Ministry of Refugees had been vacant since then, and it was unclear whether the position would be given to a member of the Haqqani network.
The reasons for Abdul Kabir’s removal and his appointment to a lower position are unclear, but Haibatullah has previously made quick changes to Taliban officials, appointing them to unrelated posts. For instance, he removed his Minister of Mines and appointed him as the head of the Red Crescent.
