In a decisive move, the United States has designated Yemen’s Ansarallah group (Houthis) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State, announced this decision on March 4, 2025, fulfilling one of Donald Trump’s campaign promises.
This decision comes in response to numerous Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Rubio emphasized that this militant group poses a serious threat to American civilian and military personnel in the Middle East, regional partners, and global maritime commerce.
The US Secretary of State also highlighted Iran’s supporting role for the Houthis and described this designation as an effective step toward limiting terrorist activities and protecting US national security interests.
