The International Chess Federation issued a statement on Thursday, May 14, 2025, expressing deep regret over the Taliban group’s decision to suspend chess in Afghanistan.

The federation emphasized that chess has a long and established presence in Afghanistan and has gained popularity in recent years with more young people taking up the game.

Atel Mashwani, spokesman for the Taliban’s sports administration, confirmed that chess has been officially suspended in Afghanistan due to “leadership problems and Sharia issues.

” Taliban officials claim that the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue has declared the game “haram” (forbidden).

In response to allegations connecting chess with gambling, the International Chess Federation clarified: “Chess is the only sport that depends entirely on skill and preparation rather than chance.

” The organization has stated that it will engage in dialogue with Taliban officials to reinstate the sport in Afghanistan’s Olympic program.
