Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, is presenting his new report today at the fifty-ninth session of the council.
On his X page, Bennett announced that this meeting will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 1:15 PM Kabul time.
The report titled “Access to Justice and Protection for Afghan Women and Girls” will be presented with some Afghan women accompanying Bennett at this session.
The Special Rapporteur has emphasized that Afghanistan is experiencing a profound humanitarian crisis that has transformed the lives of citizens, especially women.
Bennett has noted that women and girls have been systematically deprived of their fundamental rights, including education, work, and personal freedoms, while creating conditions for gender-based oppression and harassment.
This report comes as restrictions imposed on Afghan women by the Taliban group continue to remain in place, drawing international concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.
