Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the 39-year-old Mexican boxer and son of legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., was arrested on Tuesday in Studio City, Los Angeles by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The arrest came just five days after Chavez’s defeat in a boxing match against Jake Paul in Anaheim.

The US Department of Homeland Security announced that Chavez Jr. had been residing illegally in the United States and was detained due to “connections with drug cartels, multiple criminal convictions, and an active arrest warrant in Mexico.” American officials labeled him an “illegal alien” and accused him of connections to the Sinaloa Cartel.

According to The Guardian, deportation proceedings against the Mexican boxer have already begun. His recent match against Jake Paul, which ended in defeat, was reported by organizers to be the highest-grossing boxing event in Honda Center Anaheim history, generating more than $1.5 million in revenue.
