A Turkish court has issued a ruling blocking access to some content generated by the “Grok” chatbot after it reportedly produced material insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and religious values.
This AI-powered chatbot was developed by xAI, a company owned by Elon Musk who also owns the social media platform X.
According to the Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office, this marks the first time Turkey has taken legal action against content generated by an artificial intelligence tool.
Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority has begun implementing access restrictions following the court order.
Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, stated that while a complete ban on Grok has not yet been imposed, such measures could be taken if necessary in the future.
Yaman Akdeniz, a cybersecurity law professor at Istanbul Bilgi University, revealed that the Turkish government identified about 50 responses generated by Grok as the basis for its blocking decision.
The action comes amid growing concerns about AI-generated content worldwide.
Previously, Grok had been accused of producing antisemitic stereotypes and even praising Adolf Hitler, leading to the removal of several posts on the X platform following complaints from users and the Anti-Defamation League.
