The European Union has signed an agreement with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to provide €1.5 million for supporting climate and socially resilient livelihoods projects in Afghanistan.
This funding complements Switzerland’s current $8 million assistance and strengthens international efforts to help Afghan communities adapt to climate change and create sustainable livelihoods.
The project, running until January 2028, will expand activities to Khost, Paktia, and Daykundi provinces, covering the poorest households in 16 districts.
It operates through four key pathways: improving natural resource management, diversifying climate-resilient livelihoods, strengthening social cohesion, and linking communities with authorities for joint climate action.
Veronika Boskovic-Pohar, EU diplomatic mission chargé d’affaires, emphasized the investment aims to strengthen Afghan communities against climate impacts amid widespread Afghan returnees.
Masoud Karokhail from Swiss Development Cooperation highlighted the expanded support for resilient livelihood programs, enabling collaboration with Afghan communities for resource recovery and climate adaptation.
