The International Federation of Journalists, referring to the internet shutdown by the Taliban group, says this group is systematically silencing independent and critical voices through these actions.

The Taliban group cut off fiber optic and mobile internet in all provinces of Afghanistan for two days, marking the first such incident since the group came to power in 2021.

The International Federation of Journalists states that after implementing this order, the Taliban group raided the offices of internet service companies in Kunduz province and confiscated their equipment.

International and local groups defending press freedom and human rights condemned these restrictions and considered them a serious threat to freedom of expression and the survival of Afghan media.

According to the “South Asia Press Freedom” report for the period 2024 to 2025, the number of female journalists decreased from 2,833 before 2021 to only 747 in 2025.

The International Federation of Journalists said that restricting internet access is a repressive effort to intensify the suppression of fundamental freedoms.
