The World Food Programme warned on the 80th anniversary of the United Nations that one-fifth of Afghanistan’s population faces severe food insecurity.
The organization emphasized that hunger continues to grip Afghanistan, with over 15 million people facing food insecurity.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the organization’s role as a global force for peace and human dignity.
He stated that the world must recommit to multilateral action and solve problems that no single country can address alone.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, international aid has drastically decreased.
Combined with sanctions, drought, and economic collapse, millions of Afghans have become increasingly trapped in poverty and hunger.
Women and children bear the greatest burden of this situation.
