November 21st marks World Television Day, but in Afghanistan, the Taliban group has severely restricted this important medium.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center reported that 12 television networks have been shut down in the past year due to Taliban restrictions. Since the Taliban’s return to power, 57 television networks have been closed for various reasons.
The Taliban group has imposed extensive restrictions on visual media. Prohibiting the broadcast of images of living beings, banning women’s presence in programs, and stopping the broadcast of series are among these restrictions.
The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue announced that new laws will be gradually implemented.
These restrictions have been imposed while television is recognized as a tool for promoting culture and increasing public awareness.
Media advocacy organizations have asked the international community to support media freedom in Afghanistan.
