Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at an international summit in Ashgabat, called on the global community to pressure the Taliban group to fulfill their international commitments and rein in terror groups operating out of Afghanistan.
He emphasized that Islamabad needs global support to confront the threat of extremism.
Sharif thanked Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE for mediating a ceasefire between Pakistan and the Taliban, but warned the truce remains fragile.
He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and referenced UN Security Council Resolution 2788, adopted earlier this year.
These remarks come as tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban group have intensified in the past two months, leading to border closures and thousands of freight trucks stranded on both sides.
Sharif also discussed strengthening economic and regional ties with Turkmenistan’s president during his two-day visit.
