Pakistani media report that four members of a local peace committee were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The attack took place in the Bannu district as the victims were returning from a local council meeting (Jirga).
This incident adds to a surge in violence in the region, following a blast just a day earlier that killed seven police officers, claimed by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the killing of the peace committee members.
The targeting of tribal elders and security forces highlights the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan’s border areas. Authorities have launched an operation to track down the attackers amidst growing public alarm.
