Bakhretdin Khakimov, a Soviet soldier who vanished in September 1980, was discovered alive in Afghanistan 33 years later. Originally listed as dead after being seriously wounded in combat near Herat, he was rescued and nursed back to health by local villagers instead of perishing on the battlefield.

Over the decades, he fully assimilated into Afghan society, converting to Islam and taking the name Sheikh Abdullah. Living as a traditional healer and herbalist, he adopted local customs and clothing, leaving his past life and language behind to become part of the village community.

In 2013, a search by Russian veterans finally confirmed his identity through personal memories. Despite the opportunity to return to his homeland, his incredible tale remains one of the most extraordinary stories of survival to emerge from the Soviet-Afghan War.
