Local sources in Kandahar province reported that Taliban government intelligence forces have arrested Mutasim Agha Jan, a former senior official. He was reportedly detained a few days ago while traveling from Kabul to Kandahar and moved to an undisclosed location.

The arrest is allegedly linked to his efforts to create a joint council of religious scholars from Afghanistan and Pakistan to ease bilateral tensions. Furthermore, his independent political activities and major investments in various sectors, including religious education, have angered the Taliban government leadership.

Agha Jan, who served as finance minister during the first Taliban government era, has a history of previous detentions by intelligence units. Although widely regarded as a moderate figure, the current administration strictly views any unsanctioned political or religious initiatives as a direct internal threat.
