The United States has suspended some of its sanctions against Iran for a period of sixty days. This decision comes following the first round of talks aimed at reaching a preliminary peace agreement between the two nations.
American officials have described the recent negotiations held in Switzerland as a solid foundation for a final deal. However, Tehran insists that no discussions regarding its nuclear program took place and denied any agreement allowing international inspectors to return to Iranian facilities.
The preliminary agreement also includes mechanisms to de-escalate regional conflicts and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The US Treasury Department issued waivers valid until August 21 to allow limited Iranian oil exports.
