Residents of Herat province are reporting an unprecedented and severe drop in groundwater levels. The extensive use of sweet groundwater for agricultural irrigation has pushed water depths down significantly in multiple districts.

Locals state that accessing clean drinking water has become increasingly difficult as traditional wells and solar powered pumps fail to reach the lowering water table. Many communities now depend on limited humanitarian water supplies.

The United Nations recently warned that the water crisis and drought conditions in Afghanistan have nearly doubled over the past year. Environmental pressures continue to drastically reduce public access to vital water resources.
