The Afghanistan Journalists Center has confirmed that prominent Afghan journalist Bashir Hatef has been released after spending an entire year in Bagram prison. Following his liberation, he joyfully reunited with his anxious family members in Kabul.
Taliban intelligence and morality police forces arrested Hatef alongside two other media workers in Kabul last year. A military court subsequently sentenced him to one year in prison on charges of broadcasting propaganda against the current regime.
Media advocacy groups welcomed his release but strongly emphasized that his fundamental right to a fair trial was severely violated. They are urgently demanding the immediate release of all remaining imprisoned journalists and a safe working environment.
