UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Friday that six months of escalating military conflict in the Middle East has gone beyond a regional dispute and become a factor in global instability. He stressed that the Middle East cannot endure another war.
Guterres said trade through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly halted, energy markets are disrupted, and the prices of food and essential fertilizers have risen. He warned that rising prices could push millions more people back into poverty.
The UN chief called on all parties to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, stating: "The war must stop, and diplomacy must replace conflict."
