Health sources in eastern Afghanistan say there is no female specialist doctor working in Nuristan and only a few remain in Nangarhar.
Due to the lack of female specialists, midwives and female health workers are forced to perform surgeries and deliveries. Many female specialists have left Nangarhar for Kabul or abroad, leaving rural districts critically underserved.
The same problem exists in southern provinces like Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan, where only three female specialists work in Kandahar.
