A report by the European Union Asylum Agency reveals that nearly 39,000 asylum applications were filed by Afghans in Europe during the first half of 2026. Germany accounted for 51 percent of these requests, receiving almost 20,000 applications.
The overall recognition rate for Afghan asylum seekers in Europe reached 73 percent. Germany processed around 36,000 Afghan cases, granting protection status in 79 percent of the decisions made during this period.
The surge in applications in Germany is largely attributed to repeat applications from Afghan women. This followed a European Union Court of Justice ruling recognizing Taliban restrictions against women as acts of persecution.
