Officials from the Taliban government's Chamber of Commerce and Investment and the Kyrgyz ambassador to Kabul have discussed creating a direct trade route, expanding transit cooperation, and reviving the five-nation railway project.
The Taliban-controlled Bakhtar News Agency reported on Thursday, October 15, that the leadership of the Chamber's Transport and Transit Committee met with Tordakun Sydykov, the Kyrgyz Ambassador in Kabul.
According to the report, both sides emphasized the importance of the railway project connecting five countries—China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. They highlighted its critical role in strengthening regional connectivity, expanding trade, and boosting economic cooperation.
During the meeting, the Kyrgyz ambassador announced his country's readiness to begin practical work on these significant projects. He reiterated Bishkek's commitment to strengthening economic ties with Afghanistan.
The discussions also focused on the need for continued cooperation to facilitate trade, develop transport infrastructure, and enhance overall economic relations between the two nations. A direct trade route could significantly reduce the time and cost of transporting goods.
The five-nation railway project, which has been under discussion for years, has the potential to transform Afghanistan into a key regional transit hub, revitalizing its economy and that of the wider region. The railway would connect China to Iran via Central Asia, providing access to global markets.
This meeting takes place as the Taliban government seeks to expand its economic relationships with regional countries and overcome international isolation.
