Katrina Ritz, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kabul, has stated that decades of war and climate change have created serious challenges for Afghan farmers.

This crisis could severely increase food insecurity in the country, as the agricultural sector is the main source of livelihood for the people of Afghanistan.

In recent years, Afghanistan has experienced a temperature increase of 1.8°C since 1950, with rainfall decreasing by 2% per decade, exacerbating water scarcity issues

. These climate changes, along with severe droughts, have led to reduced crop yields and increased food insecurity across the country

In response to this crisis, the International Committee of the Red Cross has provided cash assistance to more than 5,000 Afghan farmers in 2024.

This support allows farmers to purchase seeds, fertilizer, and tools necessary to improve agricultural productivity and address challenges resulting from climate change and decades of conflict.
